We All Scream For Ice Cream
It's hot, y'all. It's hot and humid and sticky and gross. This is that part of a North Carolina summer my relatives in Pennsylvania tell me is inhumane. (The joke is on them when they get snow in November though.) Sometimes, when the sun seems angry at you personally and the world feels like it's falling apart (see: pandemic, police brutality, climate change, the 24-hour news cycle), there's nothing better than some ice cream to cool off and coat your insides with delicious sugar (or dairy-free
Don't Catch the Flu: Get Vaccinated!
Every year, millions of people in the United States contract influenza ("the flu"). Hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized for the flu each year and thousands die from it. You can help prevent the spread of this virus--and protect yourself from it--by getting a flu vaccine every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that all people aged six months and older need to get the vaccine. As a reference librarian, I come into contact with many people every day at work
Women's History Month: Women In Sports
In celebration of Women’s History Month, let’s honor the trailblazing women who have made significant contributions to sports, breaking barriers and setting new standards for excellence and equality. Pioneers on the Field and Beyond Women in sports have not only excelled in their respective disciplines but have also become powerful advocates for gender equity and social change. Their achievements are a testament to their determination and skill, inspiring generations to come. Breaking Records
What We're Reading Online for Black History Month
The Durham Tech Library is a member of the Dogwood Digital Library, a collection of online ebooks and audiobooks through the Overdrive/Libby app. Durham Tech faculty, staff, and students can check out books using their Durham Tech username and password, just like they can access databases off-campus. Ebooks and audiobooks check out for 21 days and can be read on your phone, tablet, or computer. Check out some of our staff recommendations that celebrate Black authors and experiences for Black
2022 Durham Tech Library Poetry Month Bookmarks!
This year's poetry month bookmarks have "Characteristics of Life" by Camille T. Dungy, "Small Kindnesses" by Danusha Laméris, "Rain" by Raymond Carver, "for grandma" by NC Poet Laureate Jackie Shelton Green, and "I Pick Up My Footprints" by Vasyl Holoborodko, translated from Ukrainian by Svetlana Lavochkina, illustrated by our own Reference Librarian Sasha Deyneka, adapted from the works of Maria Prymachenko. The file is a pdf, so you can print your own (and color them in, if that's your thing)
What We're Recommending Online for Women's History Month
Check out some of our staff recommendations that celebrate woman authors and experiences for Women's History Month that are also available through Dogwood Digital Library-- accessible through our database list or through the Libby app. Recommended by Courtney Bippley, Main Campus Librarian: "This book has advice, inspiration, hope, and data for anyone and everyone, no matter where you are in your climate change awareness." Check out the rest of her What We're Reading book review! Available as an

What We're Watching: Exterminate All the Brutes
Exterminate All the Brutes , Raoul Peck's four-part documentary series, portrays the historic patterns of colonialist violence and genocide through powerful dramatizations. Peck includes pockets of deadpan comedy through his direct, sneering narration by having white western actors verbally deliver the thin historic justification for conquest directly to indigenous audiences. The result is a unique series of visual essays that trace this historic pattern of violence right up to the political
What We're Cooking: Durham Tech's [Carb-Heavy] Home Cooking Experiments
We asked Durham Tech to share the baking and cooking they've been doing at home, and, well, we're making various quick and slow breads, embracing box mixes, getting a little fancy, and not forgetting to eat our vegetables. Click through for food pics and recipes (for most). Links to recipes are in picture captions. We've been making some bread: "sourdough" (not really successful yet), soda bread, and sandwich white bread. Creating some fancier breads, too: Parmesan and cheese herb bread, hot
