Claire Smith attended Durham Tech from January 2023 until May 2024. Her time at the College is one she remembers fondly and one that ended with her earning an associate degree in the arts.
Durham Tech is a growing institution in North Carolina, serving more than 18,000 students annually across seven campuses in Durham and Orange counties while also providing various online courses. The College is accredited and offers more than 100 associate degrees and certificates for students seeking university transfer or immediate employment.
Readers may recall a previous feature about Cynthia Perry Garland, who established an endowment through a planned gift to support enrichment experiences for students in the Gateway to College and Adult High School/High School Equivalency programs.
Garland, a 1994 alumna of Durham Tech, credits the examples of her parents and brother as her inspiration to give back. When she was 5 years old, Garland watched as her mother went back to get her high school diploma. Garland’s father drove his wife to and from school every day and ensured Garland and her brother, Andrew, had their needs met. A champion of lifelong learning, Garland named the endowment The Perry Family Memorial Endowment for Student Enrichment.

Durham Technical Community College and N.C. Central University announced Tuesday, Nov. 28, details of their Eagle Connect guaranteed admission program to enhance their transfer partnership and provide more supports for student success. The new guaranteed admission partnership is designed to make transferring more seamless for students who earn their associate degree from Durham Tech, then transfer to N.C. Central to complete their bachelor’s degree.
The construction and real estate downturn in 2009 propelled Durham Tech alumna Felicity “Fizzy” Little to look for a new, recession-proof career. She decided on law.
“Durham Tech was the only school offering a qualified Paralegal Associate degree,” Little said. “I had no real knowledge of Durham Tech prior to that, but it had the specialized program I needed so it was the place for me.”

In early December, scores of students, alumni and life sciences employers converged on Durham Tech’s Main Campus for the College’s first Life Sciences Networking event for students and interested members of the community. The event gave people interested in pursuing a career in life sciences the opportunity to meet company representatives, get advice and learn more about the variety of careers available in the field.
Policies and Procedures Manual: The Department of Defense Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding between Durham Technical Community College and the Department of Defense Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness articulates the commitment and agreement the College provides to the Department of Defense by accepting funds via each Military Service’s Tuition Assistance program in exchange for education services.
