High Altitude Ballooning (HAB) Club
Club members collaborate on technical design, construction and testing, social media publicity, outreach, fundraising, and organization of the project from inception to completion. Seven members of the club will represent Durham Tech as a team in the High-Altitude Ballooning Competition launch event.
Team members must be full-time or part-time students currently enrolled at Durham Tech in good academic standing. Foreign nationals and high school students may also be members.
Competition goals are:
- Design, build, launch and hopefully recover a recording payload from a helium balloon launched to the edge of space (~20 miles up).
- Work as a team to successfully complete an engineering design, build, test and evaluation project.
The North Carolina Space Grant, a consortium of academic institutions that promote, develop and support aeronautics and space-related science, engineering and technology education, sponsors the team challenge and competition.
Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Best Overall Payload
- Highest Altitude
- Closest to Predicted Landing Site
- Best Outreach
- Best Photo or Video
- Best Overall Teach
