Preparing for Classes

Durham Tech offers classes in three "modes of delivery": seated (also called "traditional" or "face-to-face"), online, and hybrid (combination of seated and online).

Online classes can be synchronous (everyone is online at the same time, like a Zoom call or like a group FaceTime call) or asynchronous (students can go online when it is convenient for them).

How do you know if an online class is synchronous or asynchronous?

Synchronous courses have times and dates listed.  This is a scheduled time when everyone in your class must meet online for a specified period of time.

Asynchronous courses have no times and dates listed and the location includes the word ONLINE.

Below are examples of how the course listing options look like in Self-Service so you can easily tell the difference:

SEATED

In the Self-Service screenshot image below, you see that Ms. Holders's MED-118 course is seated because it lists times and days to meet on campus, and it doesn't say ONLINE anywhere.

HYBRID

If a class is hybrid, it will have a portion that meets in the classroom and a portion that meets online.  Here is a good example:

Note: Times and locations may change, check Self-Service for the latest information.

Ms. Beatty's NAS-101-101 class will meet at the Orange County Campus, room 119 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-11:30 a.m for lab and different times and dates for clinicals at an unspecified location on the Orange County Campus. The lecture portion of the class will be online and asynchronous, so you don't have to be online at a specific time as long as you submit your work by the deadlines.

ONLINE – Asynchronous

The image below is of an asynchronous online MAT-143 class.  You can go online at any time as long as you meet the class assignment deadlines.  No days or times are listed under "Times" and the location includes "ONLINE."
