Featured speaker Susan Pusek, MPH, MS – Director of Education Programs, NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, will discuss The Human Aspect of Clinical Drug Trials.
Experts predict that the global pharmaceutical market will be worth more than $1 trillion by 2022, with the US alone holding more than 45 percent of this global market. As this industry continues to flourish, it is critical that we consider the human aspects of creating, testing, and selling these drugs. This event will examine participation in drug trials - who participates and why, the ethics and history of clinical trials, and the differences between regulation in America and other parts of the world.
About Our Speaker:
Susan Pusek, MS is the Director of Education Programs for the NC Translational and Clinical Sciences (TraCS) Institute at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Susan began her career as a research coordinator with the pediatric hematology oncology group at the University of Michigan. She came to UNC in 1992 to create a central office of clinical trials, the goals of which were to help investigators with the administrative aspects of clinical trials and to link them to professional research coordinators. In addition to running this office, Susan also continued to coordinate multiple industry-sponsored clinical trials and federally funded research projects. She also began to train students and researchers in study start-up, implementation and closure. In 2001 she formally became the Director of Training within the General Clinical Research Center at UNC which is now part of the NC TraCS Institute. Her responsibilities include developing clinical research education programs for stakeholders in the research workforce, managing formal training programs and assisting researchers and team members with career development planning. She also lectures on mentoring, grant preparation, research conduct and regulatory issues. Susan has Masters Degrees in Clinical Research Administration and Regulatory Science and is nearing completion of her doctoral degree in Regulatory Science.
