From its origins in a small farming community in Afton, North Carolina, the Environmental Justice movement has evolved into an international challenge referenced in presidential debates and executive orders. Events in the Research Triangle and Warren County that gave rise to the movement, however, are rarely mentioned in North Carolina’s classrooms or curricula. How might an understanding of the Environmental Justice movement’s origins deepen our knowledge of science, society, and effective instruction? At what cost do we ignore these lessons?
