60 for 60: Campus sports in the 70s

In celebration of Durham Technical Community College’s 60th anniversary, the College is publishing 60 for 60 – a storytelling campaign that highlights the people, places, and events that have progressed and shaped the College’s six decades of impact. In the 1970s, Durham Technical Institute offered a variety of sports and recreational activities. Although the Institute did not have a formal athletic program, the Institute sponsored organized sports through the Durham Recreation Department.  

The Institute allowed student athletics to participate in an interscholastic basketball program with members of the Piedmont Athletic Conference.  

Piedmont Athletic Conference was organized in 1969 and composed of technical institutes throughout Piedmont North Carolina. Basketball, bowling, golf and tennis were usually included in the conference activities. 

Basketball and bowling were two competitive sports at the College. Other athletic sports such as bowling, golf, volleyball, and tennis were also available for students as recreational activities.
