Durham Technical Community College will close later this month on property adjacent to Main Campus as a part of the College’s expansion.
The Durham Tech Board of Trustees approved the purchase of 1551 Cooper Street at a June 16 meeting. The deal is expected to close July 15.
The 13,520-square-foot building is adjacent to the George W. Newton Industrial and Engineering Technologies Center and the new Applied Technologies building which are also located on Cooper Street. The building is currently owned by Piedmont Metal Works, which is moving into a new facility in Mebane and approached the College about purchasing the building.
“We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity to expand campus operations into the former Piedmont Metal Works building,” said Durham Tech Interim President Tom Jaynes. “Our College community will certainly benefit from having additional space for program offerings and integrate skilled trades pathways by having that space near other College services.”
The College plans to renovate the interior of the building before opening it to students, said Chief Finance Officer Andrew Kleitsch.
The College has not made a final determination on programming for the location.
