RTI International has granted the Durham Technical Community College Foundation $50,000 to establish a scholarship endowment fund for Early Childhood Education students.
The scholarship will be named the Dr. Phail Wynn Jr. RTI International Scholarship Endowment in honor of the late Dr. Phail Wynn Jr., who served as the third president of Durham Tech before retiring in 2007.
“We are delighted to accept this gift in memory of Dr. Wynn and to honor his family’s dedication to education and the local community,” said Melissa Chappell, Executive Director of the Durham Tech Foundation. “This scholarship endowment will provide more students a path to an associate’s degree and will ultimately create a pipeline of certified Pre-K teachers.”
The scholarship will be awarded based on merit and financial need. To be eligible, the student also will have to have completed at least nine credit hours and be enrolled for at least nine credit hours in the Early Childhood Education program. Priority will be given to students who intend to transfer to North Carolina Central University’s Birth Through Kindergarten Education program.
Scholarship recipients will be able to use the funds to help cover tuition, fees, and books. Applications will be accepted beginning in spring 2020.
“Phail’s impact and influence are present throughout the community,” said Dr. E. Wayne Holden, president and CEO of RTI International. “This scholarship will serve as a reminder of his profound legacy through the lives it touches.”
The scholarship was officially announced at an event on Friday at RTI. RTI also dedicated a room on its campus as the Phail Wynn Jr. Multipurpose Center in honor of Wynn. Wynn’s wife Peggy was present for the event.
