Letter from President-elect

To the Durham Tech family:

JB Buxton wearing a suit and tie sitting at a table looking to an interviewer (offscreen) I have the honor of greeting you as the President-elect of Durham Technical Community College. For nearly sixty years, this institution has stood for access and excellence. Whether individuals have come for a degree or a high school diploma, continuing education or ESL courses, architectural technology or biotechnology, Durham Tech has offered a route to individual opportunity, economic mobility, and quality of life.

Having lived and worked in this area for almost thirty years, I know well what the College means to this region. It is a pathway to opportunity paved by the values of equity, inclusion, student success and innovation. It is a critical partner to both long-standing and emerging business sectors and employers. It is a driver of regional prosperity and a force for progress.

Now more than ever.

Today, we face the challenges of a worldwide pandemic, an uncertain economic climate, and the continuing reality of racial discrimination and inequitable treatment. Durham Tech will be called upon to deepen and expand our commitment to the Durham and Orange county communities. But more than that, to lead. Our history and these times call us to that role. As President Bill Ingram wrote just days ago, members of the Durham Tech family “understand that our mission connects us to a greater purpose.” I am excited to meet the students, staff, faculty, and partners that make up the Durham Tech family. I look forward to listening and learning from you, and working with you to write the next chapter of impact in the story of Durham Tech.

All my best,

J.B. Buxton
