Search Process

The State Board of Community Colleges, acting with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees, is authorized by North Carolina state law to appoint the president of Durham Tech. The search and selection procedures that the College will follow are consistent with the current practices of peer institutions across the state and are intended to encourage input from the entire college community. In order to attract and sustain the interest of highly qualified candidates, the Presidential Search Committee will carry out its responsibilities by adopting procedures and practices that ensure strict confidentiality.

The Presidential Search Committee will employ a hybrid search model, with an open phase at the beginning allowing Durham Tech faculty and staff to provide input via campus forums. In the second phase, RPA Inc., a national higher education search consultant, will contact candidates and assemble a pool of distinguished individuals, including many from the nation’s most elite institutions.

The Presidential Search Committee will select and review a group of top candidates and, following two rounds of interviews, will select two finalists to participate in the third phase, which will include meetings and one-on-one sessions with Durham Tech trustees, faculty, staff, and students.

Based on the results of this extensive evaluation process, the Presidential Search Committee will recommend a candidate to the Board of Trustees. North Carolina State Law requires presidents of its 58 community colleges to be elected by a majority vote of the local Board of Trustees and to be given final approval by the State Board of Community Colleges.

On April 3, Board Chair John Burness announced the Presidential Search will continue as planned. Read Burness' April 3 letter to the College community. Burness also provided an overview of the Presidential Search process in a letter to the campus earlier this year.

On May 7, Board Chair John Burness announced the Presidential Search Committee has unanimously recommended three candidates for consideration by the Durham Tech Board of Trustees. Read Burness' May 7 statement to the College community.

On June 5, Board Chair John Burness announced the State Board of Community Colleges had approved the Durham Tech Board of Trustees election of J.B. Buxton as the College's fifth president.
