March 2 - 6, 2020 Is Open Education Week
Happy Open Education Week 2020! Open Education is a movement that promotes using free educational tools--such as textbooks--that instructors have the right to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute. These five permissions are known as "The 5 Rs" of Open Educational Resources (OER). Be on the lookout for more posts about Open Education this week. Today, we will start with an overview of what makes a resource "open." What do the 5 Rs mean? Why are the 5 Rs important? There is no financial

More With NC LIVE: Natural Medicines
Did you know that NC LIVE has more databases than the ones on our database page? It's true! And, as a member of the Durham Tech community you have access to all of it. (You may also access NC LIVE through your local public library.) This post is going to look at the Natural Medicines database. First you need to know how to get to the database. You can get to NCLIVE by going directly to nclive.org or clicking the NCLIVE Home Page link on the library databases page. From there you can browse the
Reading Great SHORT Things!
Start 2021 and the Read Great Things 2021 Challenge off right and mark your short book off the list. What counts as a short book? Good question. For people who read 900 page books, a 500 pager is going to be a brief adventure, right? We're willing to be flexible with the definition of "short," but in general if you want some guidelines, aim for 250 pages or fewer or about 6 hours or shorter for an audiobook. But wait! What if the audiobook of a short book is longer than 6 hours? Does that count
New Spanish Language Collection available in the Durham Tech Libraries
Thanks to grant funding from the Durham Tech Foundation, the Durham Tech Library now has a brand-new Spanish Language Collection! Containing nearly 300 titles in print (100 of them brand new!) at the Main Campus Library and over 300 new ebooks/audiobooks available via the Dogwood Digital Library, the Spanish Language Collection is now available to all Durham Tech students, staff, and faculty. This collection is a complement to our Spanish language courses (SPA) at Durham Tech and provides a
What We're Reading-Kindred
This book was read by Courtney Bippley who is a Reference Librarian at the Main Campus Library. Why did you choose to read this book? A friend recommended this book to me and I trust her judgement. Also, I’d been meaning to read a book by this author for a while. She's well known for being an award winning, female, African American scifi/fantasy writer. I'm sorry I didn't read one of her books before she died in 2006. What did you like about it? I liked the realism of the time travel. Not in the

Read a Pie, Bake a Pie, Eat a Pie
There should be another word for cookbooks that are only recipes for baked desserts. Bakebooks? Dessertbooks? Bakertbooks? We can workshop it later. Regardless of what they are called, the library has them! I used one to make a pie on Memorial Day and it did not disappoint. The recipe came from Pie Every Day: Recipes and Slices of Life by Pat Willard. Click through to the rest of the post to see how my pie turned out! Now don't worry. If you aren't a "pie person" you'll still find plenty of
