Biomedical Equipment Technology
What generation of college student are you in your family?
I am a 1st generation college student and graduate in my family, and I had a number of family members who didn’t get to finish high school.
How did you hear about Durham Tech and why did you choose Durham Tech?
I heard about Durham Tech when I was trying to find a college that had a Biomedical Equipment Technology program. They were the only college around me that had the opportunity for this program and education.
What did you like about your program?
I worked hard as an electrician for around 8 years but was always interested in the medical field when I was younger. I enjoyed working with my hands and loved the skills I learned as an electrician and was excited when I heard that there is a job that is both involved in healthcare and working with your hands and tools. When I entered this program with Durham Tech, I liked that we had to learn and understand what the equipment does and how it helps people in the hospital, while also learning how to fix and repair problems on the equipment.
What are you doing with your degree now that you have completed your program?
Now that I’ve completed my program, I am working at Duke hospital as a biomed technician maintaining and repairing all types of medical equipment daily. I worked with the general biomed team for the first 6 months of starting my new career and now I am working with the Periop team where I now work on medical equipment in our surgical departments and operating rooms.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Anyone who is aspiring to be a biomedical equipment technician, I would say going through this program and process is 100% worth it! There will be some classes and even paperwork you may think you don’t want to go through with, but it truly is worth it in the end. I am very happy with the decision I made to get into this career, you get to meet a lot of wonderful people along the way, and your hard work will take you far.

IT Service and Support and Web Development
Why did you choose Durham Tech?
I selected Durham Tech primarily for its low student-to-faculty ratio, which ensures more one-on-one time with instructors and a truly hands-on learning experience, rather than feeling like just another face in the crowd. Being in my hometown also allows me to stay close to my grandmother, parents, and sister, which was important to me personally. Finally, Durham Tech’s affordable in-state tuition makes it possible to pursue a high-quality education without breaking the bank.
What do you like about your program?
I am enrolled in the Information Technology program, where I’ve completed two tracks: IT Service and Support, and IT Web Development. I've learned both virtual and physical computer repair—everything from desktop troubleshooting to parts replacement—and I've built small websites from scratch—either deploying WordPress sites or coding directly on a web server.
Beyond the classroom, I’m also a work-study student serving as an IT Lab Administrator at UmbrellaMed Health’s datacenter. This role has taught me far more through real-world problem solving than I ever could learn from textbooks or online labs alone.
What are your plans after you graduate?
Since I have earned my degree, I want to further my business called Imperial's Graphic Designs and More LLC. We specialize in website development of small businesses. I would also love to give back to Durham Tech—either by joining the IT staff or by teaching future students what I’ve learned.

Restorative Dental Technology
Why did you choose Durham Tech?
I chose Durham Tech because it has an accredited program. Mrs. Popov had toured me around the labs, and I could just tell she had so much passion for her job. I shadowed Jack Marrano’s “Absolute Dental Lab,” and he said that Durham Tech has the best program and that the reputation is great. This was more than enough to know when it came to my big decision!
What do you like about your program?
My favorite part of this program is the hands-on aspect and how they are preparing us for the real-life work of dental lab technicians. I also enjoy learning the digital aspect.
What are your plans after you graduate?
After graduation, I plan on taking my CDT. After my CDT, I want to work at different labs for a few years and gain as much experience as I can, and one day open my own lab!
Anything else you want us to know?
This was by far the best decision of my life. I have the best classmates and teachers here at Durham Tech. If you like being creative and working with your hands, then this is the perfect program for you!

Why did you choose Durham Tech?
I chose Durham Tech because I wanted to build strong technical skills and earn an associate degree that would allow me to enter the workforce directly after graduation. I was looking for a program that was both practical and career-focused, and Durham Tech offered exactly that.
What do you like about your program?
What I appreciate most about the IT Cloud System Administration program is the hands-on, project-based learning approach. Almost every IT-related class involves real-world projects similar to what we will encounter in the field. The instructors are very supportive and deliver the material in a clear and engaging way. I feel like I’m gaining valuable experience that will prepare me well for my future career.
What are your plans after you graduate?
After graduation, I plan to transfer to East Carolina University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity. At the same time, I hope to find an entry-level IT position to apply the skills and knowledge I developed at Durham Tech.
