Emergency Procedures

Durham Tech is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and the wider community. During an emergency, the College uses Everbridge to communicate important information and instructions during an emergency. Updates will be specific to Durham Tech operations.

In the event of an emergency, please call Campus Police and Public Safety at (919) 536-7255, ext. 5555, or call 911.

Students and employees should familiarize themselves with emergency exits, evacuation routes, and emergency procedures before an emergency occurs. For additional emergency and safety information, review the following documents

Evacuation Procedure

Durham Tech conducts evacuation drills to help students and employees become familiar with alarms, exits, assembly areas, and emergency procedures.

If you are directed to evacuate or hear the fire alarm:

• Leave the building using the nearest safe exit
• Do not use elevators
• Proceed to the designated assembly area or location directed by emergency personnel
• Remain at the assembly area and wait for further instructions
• Do not re-enter the building until authorized

Shelter-in-Place Procedure

Shelter-in-place may be used when conditions outside or elsewhere on campus make evacuation unsafe.

If instructed to shelter in place:

• Stay inside or quickly enter the nearest safe building.
• Move to an interior room with few or no windows when possible.
• Close and lock windows and exterior doors.
• Turn off fans, heaters, or air conditioners when directed or when outside air may be hazardous.
• Keep your phone available for emergency notifications.
• Follow instructions from Durham Tech Police, College officials, or emergency responders.
• Remain sheltered until you receive further instructions or an all-clear.
• If your building is unsafe or damaged, follow evacuation instructions instead.
