The Inflammatory Burden of Obesity: Implications for Metabolic and Immune Health

Nancie MacIver, MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Nutrition, and Microbiology/Immunology Division Chief, Pediatric Endocrinology
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Obesity induces a chronic inflammatory state that contributes to the progression of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and impairs immune responses to infections like influenza and COVID-19. In this seminar, we will explore the obesity epidemic, the mechanisms linking obesity to disease, and potential strategies to mitigate obesity-associated inflammation when weight loss alone is insufficient.
