Durham Technical Community College and Kate’s Korner Educational Services, will partner this spring to provide distance learning support services for grade K-5 students who live in the McDougald Terrace Community.
From March through June, Kate’s Korner Educational Services will open distance learning support services in Building 6 on Main Campus for up to 35 students to experience distance learning opportunities.
This initiative is offered at no cost.
Kate’s Korner Educational Services is a company that partners with community organizations to provide distance learning support to a demographic of children who are under served and do not have access to technology or these services. Kate’s Korner supports online learning by providing an enriched environment that has access to social and emotional support and technology needed for success.
With many families pushed into distance learning due to COVID-19, Kezia Goodwin, who founded Kate’s Korner five years ago, said it was an opportunity to provide a solution.
"Kate's Korner's goal in providing Distance Learning Support is based on my 32-year-old understanding that it takes a village to provide an adequate place where children are seen, valued, and celebrated. That representation, access, and trust are the ingredients to a child seeing past their current situation and having academic success. Our partnership with Durham Tech provides this space and represents what it looks like when the community comes together for children who might otherwise be forgotten" said Goodwin.
After learning of the needs for more distance learning opportunities for McDougald Terrace Community families, Goodwin said she reached out to Durham Tech President J.B. Buxton.
“I was moved by the quickness and response from Durham Tech, it was amazing,” said Goodwin. “The College is offering four classrooms, office and storage space and an area for students to play outdoors.”
With community collaborations, Kate’s Korner will provide:
• Academic learning assistance
• Safe space to learn and play
• Transportation
• Breakfast, lunch and snacks
• Social and emotional support
“Communities are stronger when organizations collaborate to help our residents,” said President Buxton. “We are excited to partner with Kate’s Korner in providing space for childcare and educational supports for students and parents, especially during a challenging time for so many.”
