Statement from the College on Duke $203 investment to expand economic opportunities for community

Duke University and Duke University Health System announced today that they will invest $203 million over three years to expand economic opportunities for residents of Durham and the Greater Triangle.

“Duke has been a longtime partner with Durham Tech on a variety of initiatives, including work in health care and transfer programs,” Durham Tech President J.B. Buxton said. “The announcement today shows a deep commitment to improving the lives of people in this community. We look forward to continuing to partner with Duke in a variety of ways to help meet the goals of this initiative.”

Jerry Jones, executive director of the Center for Workforce Engagement, said he sees ways to extend and grow partnerships with Duke, particularly around apprenticeship programs. The College already works with Duke on apprenticeships in Clinical Trials and Surgical Tech. Duke and Durham Tech are working on additional fields for new apprenticeship opportunities.

“We are excited about the investment that Duke is making,” Jones said. “This will create great options for our students and give us another avenue for enhancing our partnerships with Duke, particularly for apprenticeships and construction careers.”
