Today’s announcement of Catalent Pharma Solutions’ expansion of its bioanalytical manufacturing operation to Durham County is further proof of the ever-increasing importance of the life sciences to our regional economy.

Retired executive vice president Danny Thomas “Tom” Jaynes was honored for his nearly 30 years of service to Durham Tech last month at an unveiling ceremony for the College’s new D. Thomas Jaynes Art Gallery. Jaynes, who retired in June 2021, was also presented the prestigious Long Leaf Pine Society Award for service to the state of North Carolina.
Jaynes was a longtime leader at Durham Tech and focused his attention on areas of equity and inclusion, economic mobility for low-income and first-generational families, restructuring the College into Guided Career Pathways, and led the COVID-19 response for Durham Tech.
In addition, Jaynes had a deep love for art, music, photography, theatre and has been active in creative expression for over three decades. He is also an actor, poet, musician, singer, Tiki scholar, and author.
Lauren Wright, 27, and Jerry Garfunkel-Vargas, 23, both Durham Tech students, formed Team B.O.L.T. to compete in the Boston Museum of Science’s Go Carbon Neutral: A Transportation Challenge last month.
Durham Technical Community College in partnership with Research Triangle Foundation of NC announced the opening of a new campus location focused on customized industry training in Research Triangle Park (RTP). Located at the Frontier RTP 600 Building near the Hub RTP development, the site houses the leadership of the College’s Center for Workforce Engagement and training space for the College’s work with industry partners.
This partnership with the Research Triangle Foundation positions Durham Tech in the center of RTP, with the Park’s 375 established companies and a growing network of 150 emerging startups. The Center’s offices and training location sits next to the highly anticipated downtown district, Hub RTP.
“Our partnership with the RTP Foundation will allow Durham Tech to better serve the companies and employees across the Research Triangle,” said J.B. Buxton, President of Durham Tech. “It positions the College at the epicenter of RTP’s vibrant future.”
Durham Technical Community College has surpassed the $100,000 SunTrust Foundation matching challenge to grow the Dr. Phail Wynn, Jr. SunTrust Foundation Scholarship Endowment with significant contributions from community members and college partners.

The Nurse Aide curriculum prepares individuals to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals in performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages.
Durham Tech Board of Trustees member and former Duke University Board of Trustees member Barker French has had a profound and lasting impact on education in Durham.
His experience with multiple nonprofits and educational institutions has helped French see intersections of common purpose and where partnerships should be built.
