What We're Reading: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
“Atlanta is where I learned the rules and learned them quick. No one ever called me stupid. But home isn’t where you land; home is where you launch. You can’t pick your home any more than you can choose your family. In poker, you get five cards. Three of them you can swap out, but two are yours to keep: family and native land.” --Roy Othaniel Hamilton Jr in An American Marriage Roy and his wife Celestial are a young, attractive, highly-educated African American couple on the way to living their
What We're Cooking: Durham Tech's [Carb-Heavy] Home Cooking Experiments
We asked Durham Tech to share the baking and cooking they've been doing at home, and, well, we're making various quick and slow breads, embracing box mixes, getting a little fancy, and not forgetting to eat our vegetables. Click through for food pics and recipes (for most). Links to recipes are in picture captions. We've been making some bread: "sourdough" (not really successful yet), soda bread, and sandwich white bread. Creating some fancier breads, too: Parmesan and cheese herb bread, hot

Do you like coming-of-age stories [a.k.a. bildungsromans] and dragons, but in contemporary settings? Oh, and bad guys and mob guys and the swamp? Don't mind a little drinking and swearing (well, more than just a little)? Want something that isn't super depressing? Have I got the read for you! This book was read by Meredith Lewis, the [mostly] Orange County Campus Librarian. Title: Highfire Author: Eoin Colfer (yes, the Artemis Fowl guy) Genre: contemporary fantasy, dragon and boy stories, swamp
Recommended Reading from President Obama
In a New York Times article this week, Michiko Kakutani wrote, "Not since Lincoln has there been a president as fundamentally shaped — in his life, convictions and outlook on the world — by reading and writing as Barack Obama." President Obama has talked about books that have been important to him throughout his presidency. He even shared a list of books that he recently purchased for his eighteen year old daughter, Malia. Find inspiration in his recommendations! The library has many books by

Why did you chose to read this book? I read a Time Magazine interview with Colson Whitehead and had also read an article about the boy's school in Florida on which he based the book. The final quote from a man who had been there really
What We're Reading: Pumpkinheads
Josiah and Deja work at the Pumpkin Patch, a seasonal fair with food, animals, and a corn maze. It's their last night of the season and next year they'll be at college unable to work at The Patch. Will Josiah finally talk to the girl he's been pining over for years? Deja is going to make sure of it! A cute fall romance with tons of atmosphere and adorable illustrations.
