As the much-awaited movie premiere of “The Best of Enemies” occurs this week, some Durham Tech employees spoke about the film’s protagonist and longtime Durham civil rights activist Ann Atwater.
Elyse Yooley remembers what it felt like to wear her first pair of glasses.
“It was like, ‘Whoa, there are actually leaves on those trees,’” she said.
This fall, Yooley will enter her second year of the Opticianry Associate Degree program at Durham Technical Community College.
As a second-year opticianry student, Yooley will join her classmates in participating in Project SIGHT. Project SIGHT is a partnership Durham Tech has with the East Durham Children’s Initiative, or EDCI, and Durham Public Schools to provide children of low-income backgrounds with free eyeglasses.

Policies and Procedures Manual: Full-time employees in permanent allotted positions who complete an academic degree higher than the one held at the time of their initial offer of employment may receive an increase in compensation.
Receiving an honorary degree from Durham Tech at its 2025 graduation ceremony meant a great deal to Steve Schewel.
“It is an incredible honor. To be at graduation with the graduates walking the stage with their degrees was invigorating, seeing them heading out into the world with diplomas and high expectations,” Schewel said.

In August at Convocation 2024, Durham Tech celebrated the start of the academic year, welcomed new staff and reunited established colleagues.
