From Chaos to Clarity: How Canvas Gradebook Filters Can Help You

Submitted by Marisa Sullivan on

At this point in the semester, your Gradebook in Canvas has probably gathered quite a few assignment columns. The presentation of columns can seem cluttered, especially when viewing all student work in your Gradebook. While it is not hard to navigate your Canvas Gradebook, the Filters feature can help to improve clarity, organization, and ease of grading.

Filters allow you to narrow your Gradebook view to specific:

  • Modules (i.e., Week 2)
  • Assignment Groups (i.e, Exams)
  • Status (i.e., Missing, Late)
  • Submissions (i.e., Has Ungraded Submissions, Has No Submissions)
  • Start and End Date (allows you to specify a date range)

Here are some examples of using Gradebook Filters to help you focus:

  • Use Has Ungraded Submissions (Submissions) to find what assignments you need to grade in a course, this can be especially helpful with make-up work
  • Use Missing (Status) to see who missed work for the week, which can help with attendance tracking
  • Use Week 10 (Modules) to focus on grading work from last week
  • Use Exams (Assignment Groups) to look at students' performance on tests

You can also create and manage your own filters using multiple filters at once. For more information about creating and managing your own filters, visit

Using Filters can help to streamline your workflow and decrease time spent navigating the Gradebook.
