Occupational therapy assistants work alongside occupational therapists to restore clients back to their normal functioning. This often involves helping select therapy activities to fit the patient's needs and capabilities; observing and recording the patient’s progress, attitude, and behavior; and assisting with grooming and bathing the patient.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Durham Tech allows students to earn an associate degree and take the national certification exam. Courses include Fundamentals of Occupational Therapy (OT), Assessment Skills, Physical Conditions, and Psychosocial Conditions. Students also do fieldwork.
