Surgical technologists are essential in today's operating rooms. These individuals are part of the surgical team. They create a sterile field in the operating room, set up required instruments, pass instruments to the surgeon, and handle specimens.
The Surgical Technology program is the primary pathway at Durham Tech for students who wish to pursue this career. Students in the program learn to apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery and develop skills necessary to prepare supplies, equipment, and instruments. Students also learn to maintain aseptic conditions, prepare patients for surgery, and assist surgeons during operations.
