SEF-3001SH CHW Field Practicum

The Community Health Worker (CHW) Field Practicum Course is designed to engage students in quality learning opportunities that support the development of CHW core competencies and provide Community Health Worker job experience. The nine core competencies essential to working as a certified CHW include building knowledge base, communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal skills, advocacy, outreach, personal skills, and professional skills. Students are assigned to a CHW Field Practicum site by the program. Settings of CHW Field Practicum sites vary to provide students with the opportunity to explore different focus areas and gain experience working with a current Community Health Worker employed at a selected agency. Community Health Workers in North Carolina work in a variety of healthcare and community settings (Health Departments, Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Clinics, Faith-based Organizations, etc.). This course is recommended for students that have completed the Community Health Worker or Promotores de Salud Courses and current Community Health Workers that would like to gain additional experience or explore working in new focus areas. Requirements: Must be at least 18 years old and students in this course will need to complete a criminal background check and a drug screen PRIOR to the first day of class. Students are encouraged to attend a program orientation to learn more about field practicum requirements, how to start the background check and screening process, and register for the course. Contact bhealth@durhamtech.edu for information regarding the program orientation and/or registration process.
