Need a little more football in your life? This show was watched by Rachel Smith, Northern Durham Center Librarian. Title: All American (tv series; 2 seasons available streaming on Netflix and the CW) Genre: Drama The series opens when a rising high school football player from South Central Los Angeles is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High. The show details the wins, losses, and the struggles of two families. They are in the same city, but they're from two different worlds— the poverty
Fall Semester is Coming!
Fall classes start on Monday, August 16, which means next week is Fall Semester Preparation Week! The Library (and the College with the exception of the Bookstore) will be closed to students on Monday, August 9 for professional development. The Library will reopen to students on Tuesday, August 10. Check the Library and College website for up-to-date hours for next week and the fall semester. What's new for the fall semester? Well, classes are back in person (still online, too!) and everyone
Picture (Book) Perfect
Did you know that the Durham Tech Library has a whole collection of children's picture books? Well, we do! They are located against the wall on the lower level of the library. We have classics, awards winners, and freshly published titles for you check out. My personal favorites are the ones with dragons in them. Dragons are great. Come by and check some out. I bet someone wants you to read to them!
New Books and a New Movie
We are pleased to add the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning film Boyhood. The film follows a boy named Mason and his family as he experiences the pleasure and pain of growing up. Notable for being filmed with the same cast over a 12 year period, we can watch as the actors themselves grow with the roles they play. [caption id="attachment_1153" align="aligncenter" width="209"] Boyhood[/caption] Also, this month we have a great crop of new books for your reading pleasure. [gallery type=
What We're Reading: The Shining Girls
The book was read by Meredith Lewis, a Librarian at (mostly) the Orange County Campus Library. The library copy of this book is available downstairs in the Main Campus Library. [caption id="attachment_3077" align="aligncenter" width="200"] The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes[/caption] Why did you choose to read this book? I read another one of Lauren Beukes' books, Zoo City and really liked it. When I realized we had The Shining Girls in our collection, I went ahead and checked it out because I'd
What We're Reading: Sourdough
Available on the New Book Shelf at the Durham Tech Main Campus Library. Title: Sourdough Author: Robin Sloan Genre: Uh... contemporary tech fiction with a light touch of magical realism? Read by: Meredith Lewis (Orange County Campus Librarian) & Courtney Bippley (Main Campus Librarian) Why did you choose to read this book? Meredith: Honestly? The description was really interesting-- a San Francisco robotics engineer "adopts" a mysterious international sourdough starter and gets involved in a
Read Great Things 2019: Personal Goals!
For many, January is a time to mindfully start new habits, either just as a new year reset (hello, dry-anuary participants and all of you doing Whole 30 for your very last day today!) or as the start of a new, hopefully enduring habit. The library surveyed Durham Tech faculty and staff and asked them to anonymously share their goals for 2019. Have similar goals? Why not use the Read Great Things Challenge to help you reach those goals by reading a book to expand your knowledge, and also check
Open Educational Resources at Durham Tech (and a TLC Presentation on Nov. 3)
Have you heard of Open Educational Resources (OER)? Maybe you've heard they're "free textbooks." Maybe you've heard that replacing commercial textbooks with open textbooks improves students' success and retention rates. Maybe you've heard that instructors can edit OER, mix them together, or otherwise modify them to align with your learning outcomes. Maybe you know someone right here at Durham Tech who is already teaching using OER. Expanding OER adoption can be an important tool in furthering
What We're Reading-An Ember in the Ashes
