What We're Cooking: Durham Tech's [Carb-Heavy] Home Cooking Experiments
We asked Durham Tech to share the baking and cooking they've been doing at home, and, well, we're making various quick and slow breads, embracing box mixes, getting a little fancy, and not forgetting to eat our vegetables. Click through for food pics and recipes (for most). Links to recipes are in picture captions. We've been making some bread: "sourdough" (not really successful yet), soda bread, and sandwich white bread. Creating some fancier breads, too: Parmesan and cheese herb bread, hot
Out Loud in the Library with Tayari Jones
The final Library Fest Podcast is out now! I was honored to interview three amazing, influential, and accomplished people for Out Loud in the Library and Library Fest-- Gordon C. James, Volkan Alkanoglu, and Tayari Jones. You can find the first two interviews at the links below. Gordon C. James interview with Out Loud in the Library. Volkan Alkanoglu interview with Out Loud in the Library. However, this blog post is to highlight the interview I did with Tayari Jones, author of An American
Getting Crafty this Spring: Upcoming Crafternoons!
Despite the weirdness of the first two weeks of the semester with weather and unexpected power/data outages, we've made it to week three. Congrats! Why not reward yourself with a little midweek Crafternoon once a month? This semester, we'll be learning a few new crafts and leveraging the talents, skills, and resources of our on-campus partners. As usual, all supplies will be provided for Durham Tech students, faculty, and staff. One new thing this semester: We love that we've had so many folks
What We're Reading: Leaving the Sea: Stories
Title: Leaving the Sea: Stories Author: Ben Marcus Genre: short stories / experimental fiction Read Great Things Challenge 2018 category: a book you chose for the cover; a book with a supernatural creature, occurrence, or event (maybe) Why did you choose to read this book? I was drawn in by the cover art at first. The reviews on the back of the dust jacket also made the stories sound interesting to me. One of my favorite authors, Michael Chabon, has a blurb on the back of the book praising

Shark Week!
It's Shark Week! Did you watch Shark Week on the Discovery Channel with family and friends in years past? I did! Millions of people tuned in every year to learn about these fearsome predators. And yet, many people are still very afraid of sharks, to the point that society has turned a blind eye to the fact that their populations are at risk. Even the writer of Jaws regrets convincing people they are scary, when really, they are one of the ocean's most amazing and important creatures. Want to

Indigenous People's Day
In 2017, the state of North Carolina proclaimed the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day. What is Indigenous People's Day? An alternative to Columbus Day, Indigenous People's Day is "a celebration ... to bring acknowledgment to the Native population" and remove the focus from Columbus, a man who caused harm to Native populations. Want to learn more about Indigenous people's history and culture? Here's a very small selection of the books available through the Durham Tech library
In Memoriam: Rachel Smith, Northern Durham Center Librarian
The Durham Tech Library staff is heartbroken to announce the death of Rachel Smith, our Northern Durham Center Librarian and off-site library liaison. We are shocked and devastated, and in addition to feeling Rachel's loss at our college, we are incredibly sad for her family’s loss. Rachel joined our Durham Tech Library team in January 2020. Ten weeks later, we were all off-campus and trying to adapt to new, uncharted circumstances. To help support our campus community during the transition
