The Durham Tech Library accomplished a lot this year! We held 72 class instruction sessions in the library to teach 1221 students about information literacy, citations, and how to use our resources. Between the big windows and the stands on the lower level we put up 31 themed displays. Nine hundred and forty-seven new books and DVDs were added to our collection, and that doesn't even include donations from a variety of generous individuals. Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator, died on May 8, 2012, in Danbury, CT, at the age of 83. Maurice Sendak received the Caldecott Medal in 1964 as the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The library recently added many new feature films and documentaries to our collection. You may check out two movies at a time for one week with your library card. Here are some of the new titles: The Artist Beginners The Descendents Do the Right Thing Hugo One Woman, One Vote Prohibition Roots A Separation Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Twilight series War Horse Water for Elephants and many more. This spring the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) replaced its seventh edition handbook with a new eighth edition. The new edition includes significant changes that focus more on the process of writing and documenting sources. Previous editions of the handbook provided very specific guidelines for formatting and citing and the new eighth edition outlines basic core elements and principles of MLA documentation and explains how writers can use them in different situations. Dr. Katherine Johnson, part of the human computer team at NASA and responsible for hand calculating NASA's path to space, has died at 101. She graduated from West Virginia State College with degrees in math and French and briefly worked as a teacher before working for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (which would later become NASA) at Langley Research Center.
