Policies and Procedure Manual: In accordance with State Board of Community Colleges code, Durham Technical Community College (Durham Tech) assures sound fiscal and management practices.
When prospective students call Durham Tech with questions about the enrollment process or advising, they likely have the pleasure of speaking to Bill Williams, or “Mr. Bill” as he is affectionately known on campus.
When the 79-year-old is not working in the College’s call center as a work-study student, he is attending classes in the Ingram Building where he is earning an Associate in Applied Science Degree in IT Service and Support – his second degree at Durham Tech and fourth in his lifetime.

The impact of Maryah Smith-Overman can be seen in many faces and spaces throughout the Bull City. Her custom woodworks are on display in homes and businesses around Durham, but her most significant impact is felt within the evolving trades field.
She is a campus leader and the driving force behind the skilled trades at Durham Tech – tripling the number of course offerings, increasing enrollment, and introducing apprenticeships – all since her start in 2016. Smith-Overman serves as the Director of Construction Trades and Assistant Dean of Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades at the College.
She serves as co-Principal Investigator on the Power of Us program, which seeks to recruit, support, and retain more female students to a targeted set of Career and Technical Education programs. She is also a champion for apprenticeship programs, which led Vice President Kamala Harris to visit Durham Tech earlier this year.
Her mission is simple: To create a welcoming environment at Durham Tech where anyone that wants to learn a trade can learn a trade. She wants our diverse student population to begin seeing themselves represented in an otherwise white male dominated field.

Due to the limited spaces, admission to a health technology program is gained either by a first-qualified, first-admitted process (for most health programs) or by a competitive admissions process (for nursing programs).

Most importantly, I want to thank the Durham Tech graduating Class of 2024. You’ve earned my congratulations, and my gratitude. As Kurt Vonnegut said in one of his many commencement speeches: “By becoming informed and reasonable and capable adults, you have made this a better world than it was before you got here.” I thank you for doing so and am honored and humbled to address you and celebrate with you today.

Aaron McCullum, a Durham Tech Architectural Technology student, has been selected as the College’s nominee for the Dallas Herring Achievement Award and the recipient of the Tony Kleese & Christine Kelly-Kleese Resilience Award.
The Dallas Herring Achievement Award was established by the North Carolina Community College System in 2010 to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. All 58 community colleges choose a candidate. The state award is bestowed annually upon a current or former student who best embodies Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”
