Duke University Health System, Duke Office of Durham and Community Affairs and Durham Technical Community College are joining forces to address the national nursing labor shortage crisis impacting North Carolina. Kathryn Oliva, a Honduras native and Durham Tech graduate, was 17 when she came to the United States. She started taking classes at Durham Tech within a year of her arrival.
“Durham Tech has a special place in my heart. From the beginning I had classmates from other countries. That was amazing to me,” Oliva said. “I got to know about other countries, even with never having visited them. I got to meet other non-English speaking students with good hearts that I never would have met if I hadn’t been at Durham Tech. Many of us still talk and go out. My Durham Tech time was such a good thing for me.”

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fundamentals Certificate program prepares students for entry-level roles supporting artificial intelligence technologies in the IT sector. The program is designed for individuals seeking foundational knowledge of AI concepts and practical skills for working with AI-driven tools and systems.

The construction and real estate downturn in 2009 propelled Durham Tech alumna Felicity “Fizzy” Little to look for a new, recession-proof career. She decided on law.
“Durham Tech was the only school offering a qualified Paralegal Associate degree,” Little said. “I had no real knowledge of Durham Tech prior to that, but it had the specialized program I needed so it was the place for me.”
