Tiffany Skouby’s leadership journey began in a psychology class at Durham Tech’s Orange County Campus in 2010.
The instructor broke students up into test groups for a project and Skouby’s group were all members of the LGBTQ+ community. The students grew close as they discussed challenges they faced every day.
“Our group didn’t feel represented. We had a voice and we wanted to be heard,” Skouby said. “Durham Tech heard us loud and clear. From that group, an organization grew.”

Whitney Young came to Durham Tech in 2020 to serve as the coordinator for the Community Health Lab. She grew up overseas in Costa Rica where she learned to appreciate diverse cultures and developed her passion for helping others.
Durham Tech provides accessibility services designed to create equal access to the many aspects of education. Students have the opportunity to voluntarily self-identify with the College as having a disability or medical condition that may impact access to programs and activities.
Psychologists counsel individuals, groups, or families to help them understand problems, deal with crisis situations, define goals, and develop realistic action plans.
Culinary courses provide useful skills to break into an ever-growing industry.
When you walk into First Chronicles Daycare in Durham, you see cheerful, organized, educational stations for the children who attend. Their names are neatly placed at the table where they sit. There are books and bright colors to stimulate their young minds.
“This is where all the magic happens,” said Pebbles Lucas, who co-founded the five-star daycare on Linwood Avenue in 2008, that her husband, Pastor William Lucas, founded. She has created a safe, loving environment at First Chronicles, where children thrive.
In recognition of her work, Lucas has been named the Child Care Services Association 2024 recipient of the prestigious Mary Y. Bridgers Early Childhood Teacher Award.
