Due to the strong U.S. economy in the 1980s, the presence of Japanese businesses boomed throughout the country, including more than 40 new or relocated Japanese facilities in North Carolina alone.
In 1987, an independent federal agency, Japan-United States Friendship Commission approved a $22,891 grant for Durham Technical Community College to lead a new project of lectures called “Instruction to the American Production Worker in a Japanese Factory.”
The North Carolina Department of Community Colleges (now North Carolina Community Colleges System Office) and the Japan Center at North Carolina State University also funded $41,791 to support this project.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) from Durham Tech equips students with skills for entry-level law enforcement jobs in state, county, or private sectors.
Erin Popov, Dental Laboratory Technology (DLT) Program Director/Instructor at Durham Technical Community College, received the 2023 National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) Educator of the Year award on January 20.
“I am humbled to have been nominated and so grateful for being selected,” said Popov. “Teaching takes a lot of heart and hard work and so many other educators are as equally deserving.”
The NADL Educator of the Year award recognizes one educator annually who has made outstanding contributions to NADL and the dental laboratory profession. An industry member nominated Popov, and she was announced the winner at the awards reception held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Criminal Justice Professional Training Program offers classes to area law enforcement officers. These classes provide re-certification for current skills and opportunities to enhance an officer's skills in new areas.
