News: VP Dr. Susan Bowen selected for Aspen Institute’s Rising Presidents Fellowship
The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program announced Wednesday, April 5, that Durham Technical Community College Vice President and Chief Campus Operations Officer Dr. Susan Bowen is one of 35 leaders selected for the 2023-24 class of the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship. This program, delivered in collaboration with the Stanford Educational Leadership Initiative, prepares the next generation of community college presidents to transform institutions to achieve higher and more equitable levels of student success.

News: Durham Tech Board of Trustees welcomes new chair, vice chair, appointees
Durham Tech Community College’s Board of Trustees welcomed new board Chair Dr. Pat Ashley and new Vice Chair Gracie Johnson-Lopez to their new roles Tuesday, Aug. 19. The board unanimously elected them in June and their terms began July 1 and will run through June 2026.
News: Durham Tech and Wake Tech partner to launch RTP Bio, a biotechnology training and talent collaboration
Durham Technical Community College and Wake Technical Community College announced the launch of RTP Bio, a new workforce development collaboration that unites biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and biopharmaceutical talent pipelines of the two community colleges in the Research Triangle Park region.

Durham Tech and Wake Tech serve the fifth largest biotechnology hub in the United States, with Research Triangle Park located in both college’s service regions. The location and expansion of life science and biopharma industries have significantly accelerated employment demands. In 2020, more than 11,000 biotechnology jobs were created in the Research Triangle.

Current offerings at Wake Tech include degrees in Biopharmaceutical Technology and Biotechnology and continuing education through the BioWork credential. Durham Tech offers degrees in Clinical Trials Research, Biomedical Equipment Technology and continuing education through the BioWork credential. Durham Tech also plans to add new degrees in biotechnology-related programs in the coming year.
News: RTP Bio, a new biotechnology partnership between Durham Tech and Wake Tech, receives $1.2 million in federal funding
U.S. Rep. David Price joined Durham Technical Community College President J.B. Buxton and Wake Technical Community College President Scott Ralls in celebrating the $1.2 million Community Project Funding grant championed by Rep. Price to support the new workforce partnership between RTP Bio and the two colleges.

Durham Tech and Wake Tech announced a joint RTP Bio partnership in March – a new workforce development collaboration that unites biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and biopharmaceutical talent pipelines of the two community colleges in the Research Triangle Park region.
 
Congressman Price said that $1.2 million in funding that he was able to secure for the RTP Bio Workforce Development Project was included in the recently passed Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations omnibus, which included critical direct spending opportunities referred to as Community Project Funding.

News: Pulitzer winner who attended Durham Tech will be 2023 Commencement speaker
Pulitzer Prize winner and former Durham Technical Community College student Elizabeth Fenn will be the college’s 2023 Spring Commencement keynote speaker.

Dr. Fenn won the Pulitzer in the history category in 2015 for her book “Encounters at the Heart of the World: A History of the Mandan People,” which explores the role of the Native American tribe over the course of centuries
News: 60 for 60: Durham Tech kicked off 60th anniversary celebration with William. G. Ingram Center dedication, Night at the Bulls
More than 100 campus community members, including local and regional elected officials, current and former Board of Trustee members, College partners, alumni, retirees, employees and students gathered for an outdoor ceremony to celebrate the dedication of the Ingram Center. The Center is the first new academic building on Main Campus in 15 years.

Former President Ingram was the College’s fourth leader and served in a variety of leadership roles at Durham Tech over four decades.
News: Owner of Durham distillery gets small business start at Durham Tech
Vilgalys, 33, grew up watching his father make Krupnikas, a traditional Lithuanian-style Spiced Honey Liqueur, and when he was old enough, his father taught him how. Vilgalys perfected the craft during his college years in California before moving back to Durham in 2008 to live with his brother, Gabriel.
