Elizabeth Fenn didn’t take the usual college path.

​​​​​​​In the mid-1980s, just before starting her doctoral dissertation at Yale University, she left the program, moved to Hillsborough, North Carolina, took automative classes at Durham Tech, and then worked in auto shops around Durham for nearly a decade. She later returned to Yale, finished her dissertation, and became a leader in her field. She became an historian, writer, and professor.

The wise words of Dr. Phail Wynn, Jr. filled the DPAC auditorium during Durham Tech’s 2018 commencement ceremony.  

“Each of you has vast amounts of untapped potential that has not been discovered or has not been developed simply because the circumstances of your life have never called them forth,” said Wynn, the third president of Durham Tech. “You have barely scratched the surface of your deep reservoir of hidden talent. Use your knowledge and skills wisely, to the benefit and betterment of your community and of society as a whole.” 

His passion for higher education was a constant in his life.

Durham Technical Community College partnered with UNC Health this summer to launch a central sterile processing course that included lectures, clinical rotations, and resulted in guaranteed full-time employment for graduates.
News: Durham Tech president announces retirement after more than 35 years of service
President Bill Ingram officially announced his plans to retire at the end of his contract next summer during a Durham Technical Community College Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night. Ingram has served at the College in various capacities since 1983. Ingram has led Durham Tech as its fourth president since January 2008, succeeding the late Dr. Phail Wynn Jr. Ingram is set to retire from Durham Tech on June 30, 2020, pending the conclusion of the presidential search process.
