Work-Based Education and Apprenticeship
Work-Based Education and Apprenticeship collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to create learning opportunities for students to engage with employers through Work-Based Learning (WBL), pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, and on-the-job training, enabling students to gain valuable work experience. This area also works alongside stakeholders to help identify short-term training aligned with the growing workforce.
Durham Tech students have opportunities inside and outside the classroom to grow professionally and engage in hands-on learning experiences such as on-the job training, registered apprenticeships, work-based learning (WBL) courses, and part-time temp jobs.
Work-based learning pairs students with an employer in their area of study for a work experience designed to prepare them for a successful career.
Work-based learning is an extension of the curriculum that takes place outside of the traditional classroom setting. Students who enroll in WBL are paired with an employer in their area of study to engage in hands-on work experience designed to prepare them for the workforce. WBL students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their technical and employability or soft skills.
Students enrolled in a Career and Technical program register for WBL as a part of their program of study. This course provides students with valuable work experience and builds employability skills.
Students must contact their academic advisor to apply for the course and meet the following:
Complete the WBL application provided by their academic advisor
Preparing to enter their last semester, or next to last semester before completing their program of study.
Have a 2.0 or higher GPA at the time of course enrollment
Complete any required Development Education coursework

Students learn about prospective careers through employer tours, lunch and learn, mentoring, and service learning.
Career engagement activities include job shadow, short-term internships, service learning, pre-apprenticeships, mock interviews, and interview preparation.
