Placement Testing
Durham Tech uses placement tests in subjects like Math and English to check the academic skill levels of entering students to ensure they are placed in the correct classes.
Durham Tech accepts students’ college transcripts; unweighted high school GPA; and ACT, SAT, GED®, HiSET®, NCDAP, COMPASS, ASSET, and ACCUPLACER scores within 10 years from the date taken for college placement.
New Student Placement
Students who have earned an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States are college-ready and can take any gateway 100-level course on their plan of study.
Students who do not already hold an associate degree or higher from the United States must use their unweighted high school GPA for placement if they graduated from an accredited high school in the United States.
Students who have earned an associate degree or higher from another country should contact the Center for the Global Learner for support.
Durham Tech Placement Tests
Students who do not place directly into college-level English and Math courses based on the above placement measures have the option of taking the Durham Tech Placement Tests. There is no fee to take any portion of the test. Your scores will be shared with your Academic Advisor.
If special accommodations are required due to functional limitations from a disability, please contact Accessibility Services.
ACCUPLACER ESL Test
A free, untimed, multiple-choice online test that helps evaluate a student's English skills to place them into the appropriate classes.
ATI TEAS Test
Required for student placement into Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), and Respiratory Therapy programs.
Proctored and Make-Up Tests
Instructors can provide tests a student has missed during class, so they may take them in a quiet, secure environment in the Testing Center. Email the proctoring@durhamtech.edu if you have questions.
