Avila, a native of Honduras, attended a high school there before her family sought political asylum and came to the United States. Avila said her schooling got a little muddled at that point as the senior year in Honduras is 11th grade.

Four trustees are appointed by the Durham County Board of Commissioners; eight trustees are appointed by the General Assembly; two trustees are appointed by the Orange County Board of Commissioners; and one trustee, who shall serve as an ex officio, non-voting member, by virtue of their election as the College’s Student Government Association President.
