Elizabeth Fenn didn’t take the usual college path.
In the mid-1980s, just before starting her doctoral dissertation at Yale University, she left the program, moved to Hillsborough, North Carolina, took automative classes at Durham Tech, and then worked in auto shops around Durham for nearly a decade. She later returned to Yale, finished her dissertation, and became a leader in her field. She became an historian, writer, and professor.
Durham Technical Community College announced plans on Tuesday for a 124-unit affordable housing development on South Briggs Avenue near its Main Campus. The development is intended to serve both eligible students at Durham Tech and members of the broader Durham community.
During a news conference event in the Phail Wynn Jr. Student Services Center, Durham Tech President J.B. Buxton called the housing initiative “transformative” for Durham Tech students and Durham residents who need affordable housing options in the region.
Students who ultimately wish to complete a baccalaureate of arts degree in Journalism at a four-year college or university would complete the Associate in Arts (AA) degree.

In the late 1980s, Durham Tech was growing on all fronts and bursting at the seams for classroom space.
Leadership at the College knew it was time to expand, and in 1989, 27 acres of land were purchased on Snow Hill Road to construct the Northern Durham Center (NDC).
In a message to the campus community in 1989, then-President Phail Wynn Jr. announced the project.
“The northern campus will be built in five phases over a period of ten to fifteen years. The first of these phases includes a 30,000-square-foot, multipurpose building,” Wynn said.
Today’s announcement of Catalent Pharma Solutions’ expansion of its bioanalytical manufacturing operation to Durham County is further proof of the ever-increasing importance of the life sciences to our regional economy.
