On June 10, 2015, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced the appointment of Juan Felipe Herrera as the 21st US Poet Laureate. Dr. Billington said, "His poems engage in a serious sense of play—in language and in image--that I feel gives them enduring power. I see how they champion voices and traditions and histories, as well as a cultural perspective, which is a vital part of our larger American identity." The Library is saddened by the passing of Dr. Phail Wynn, Jr. He was a champion of students and a supporter of the library both during his tenure as President of the College and after. For more than ten years (established in 2007), Dr. Wynn donated funds to establish a special collection based around eight topics he selected consisting of materials that, as per Dr. Wynn's request, "pertain (…) to socially responsible topics…" The topics he selected were the following: Cultural Awareness Global

The Hayti Heritage Film Festival, created in 1994 to create and celebrate a "Black film ecosystem in the South" and normally held in Durham at St. Joseph's United AME Church, is mostly virtual this year.
