Introducing Durham Technical Community College Graphic Novel Grant

We have some GRRRREAT news to share! The Durham Tech library was recently awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), to expand our graphic novel collection and bring exciting new programs to campus.

Graphic novels are much more than just fun reading. They are powerful learning tools. Combining visuals with text helps lower cognitive load, build vocabulary, and boost comprehension. Thanks to this funding, we are doubling down on our commitment to visual literacy, inclusive learning, and awesome stories!

Graphic Novels Workshops for Faculty

Research suggests that graphic novels and other visual narratives can help reduce common reading barriers. In partnership with the Organizational Development and Learning (ODL) office, the library will offer two workshops for faculty across disciplines, one in Fall 2026, and one in Spring 2027.

These sessions will focus on integrating graphic novels into assignments, lesson plans, and course activities, with an emphasis on accessibility, visual literacy, and inclusive pedagogy.

  • How to join: Contact Adrian Knight (knighta@durhamtech.edu) for more details.

New Graphic Novel Book Club for Students!

Help us spread the word! We are hosting a student’s only Book Talk this Fall to share some of our favorite graphic novels and ask students what they would like the library to purchase for the collection. Students will get to share their favorite reads and help us choose new titles to purchase for the library collection. They will also help select the first spring book club title.

  • Date of “Book Talk”: September 17th at 1:00 PM
  • Location: Main Campus Library, Room 105

LSTA grant awards are made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the Library of North Carolina, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (IMLS grant number LS-260837-OLS-26). LSTA grants are awarded in response to specific needs of North Carolina's public and academic libraries. These federal funds are investments that help libraries deliver relevant and up-to-date services to their communities.
