Read Great Things BINGO for 2024: A New Take on our Reading Challenge

Submitted by Durham Tech Library on

One item of wrap-up before moving on to 2024-- if you haven't filled out the Read Great Things 2023 completion form to document your "win," you have until Thursday, February 15 to do so. Not sure if you've "won"? Click on the form or the 2023 challenge information guide. You'll have needed to complete 10 categories in total, but can double-dip, so five well-chosen books can do it for you. No sign up was necessary, so if you read it in 2023, you could win!

Prizes will be available late February/early March.

New year, new reading challenge.

This year, we're starting a bit late, but going for BINGO in 2024.

Durham Tech Library Read Great Things BINGO 2024

As always, no sign-up is necessary-- start whenever you want. All books or activities just need to have been completed between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024. We'll accept five in a row (vertical or horizontal), diagonal, or four corners.

No double-dipping in a single BINGO, but one book or activity can be used for up to two BINGOS. For example, if you read the AI book You Look Like a Thing and I Love You by Janelle Shane, it could be used to complete the BINGOS for "Read a book about artificial intelligence" and "Read a book by someone who has also done a TED Talk."

You can complete the form (that opens Feb. 15) to document a BINGO multiple times during the year or just once towards the end. Each BINGO will make you eligible for additional prizes or drawings.

February is also Black History Month.

How can we BINGO during Black History Month with some awesome selections included from the Durham Tech Library Collection?

Black History Month Read Great Things 2024 BINGO

Let's say I decide to read Victor LaValle's Lone Women, a supernatural take on women homesteaders in Montana, which is definitely based around A real historical event. I could also read Unmasking AI by Joy Buolamwini, who has done a TED talk on algorithmic bias. I really loved The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee, so I can take this opportunity to re-listen to the audiobook version (available through Dogwood Digital) or I can listen to some new content through the one season of her podcast that she did with Higher Ground that's on Spotify. Keeping with my audio theme, I could then listen to Harry Dunn's audio-memoir (published within the last 5 years) about his experiences as a police officer at the US Capital on January 6th, available through the Library's Dogwood Digital Library ebook and audiobook collection. To wrap up my BINGO on a tasty note, I can check out Erika Council's cookbook And Still I Rise to try making something from her cookbook--maybe an angel biscuit to start.
