Do Healthy Things: Employee Wellness
Durham Tech's goal is to help employees shift their lifestyle from unconscious living—not thinking about your health until there’s a problem—to conscious living—actively making healthy and positive choices to promote wellness. Wellness Alliance defines wellness as “the active pursuit to understand and fulfill your individual human needs—which allows you to reach a state where you are flourishing and able to realize your full potential in all aspects of life.”
Durham Tech’s Employee health and wellness resources include monthly events like webinars, fitness opportunities, and online wellness assessments to help individuals focus on the seven areas of wellness outlined by the Wellness Alliance: Health, Meaning, Safety, Connection, Achievement, Growth, and Resiliency.
Fitness On Campus
Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Durham Tech offers opportunities for you to be physically active at work.
- Workout Space: Exercise machines and equipment are available in Newton (Building 4), Room 141. To access the workout space, you will need to complete the Release of Liability Form.
- Meditation Space: Available to all students and employees in Tech (Building 9), Room 118, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Allow this quiet space to help you refocus your mind and energy.
Self-Care On Campus
Take advantage of the many services offered by Durham Tech to prioritize your physical, mental, or emotional well-being. Visit our Optical Shop or schedule an appointment with one of our salons and clinics.
Wellness Education
Wellness is more than just the absence of illness and disease. It’s fulfillment in several areas that are interconnected and contribute to your overall health and wellness.
The North Carolina Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) hosts monthly virtual Lunch and Learn events focused on the health and wellness of State employees. You’ll find upcoming webinars as well as a list of recordings, presentations, and recipes from previous webinars. For additional wellness information, visit OSHR’s Wellness Resource page.
Community and Events
Durham Tech offers wellness events throughout the year to help keep our students, employees, and community safe and healthy.
- Volunteer in the Community
Community service allows us to extend the walls of our classrooms and the boundaries of our campuses, providing students, faculty, and staff with hands-on, real-world experiences while helping others. Learn more about volunteering in the community below.
- Community Share Groups
Leadership continuously assess ways create a more engaged campus community by bringing employees together around areas of personal interest that are priority among our colleagues. These groups would meet roughly once a month, during lunch on campus and can include:
- Speakers
- Resource information
- Opportunities to ask questions of the group and share stories
Note: Participants would bring their own lunch.
Currently, we have two (2) active Community Share Groups:
- Reading Circles, Contact Person: Meredith Lewis
- Gardening Club, Contact Person: Toni Brown
If you are interested in hosting a share group or would like certain topics brought to your campus location, please complete Durham Tech’s Community Share Groups Survey. For additional questions or concerns, please email the email the Public Health Officer at publichealth@durhamtech.edu.
- Blood Drives
Research shows that giving back can increase your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Your brain releases Serotonin, Dopamine, and Oxytocin, also known as the “feel good” chemicals, when you help someone or give a gift. In collaboration with The Blood Connection, Durham Tech hosts three (3) blood drives per year to offer opportunities for you to give back.
Blood drives are held on Main Campus in the Wynn Center (Building 10), room 103 and on Orange County Campus from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Giving blood is just one of many ways you can give back. You can research other volunteer opportunities, donations, and support that you find meaningful.
- Vaccinations
Durham Tech has worked to balance safety, accessibility, and equity in our response to the pandemic and other public health emergencies. Your vaccination will bolster our commitment to keeping our students, employees, and community safe and healthy.
COVID-19 vaccination provides protection against serious illness and outcomes associated with COVID-19, including emergency department or urgent care visits, hospitalizations, and death. Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines, containing original and Omicron BA.4/5 spike protein components, help restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination.
COVID-19 vaccines are available to everyone 6 months and older.
