Durham Tech is deeply committed to providing accessible, free arts experiences for all students, many of whom are from underserved minority communities. The College prioritizes connecting students with arts and cultural opportunities they otherwise might not be able to access. To institutionalize these commitments, Durham Tech formed a Viva the Arts Committee in 2000, co-led by Library and Foundation personnel. Durham Tech instructor Bridget Bell began writing her debut poetry collection, “All That We Ask of You Is to Always Be Happy,” during a difficult period in her life.
“I started the book a couple of months after my first child, my daughter, was born. She is 10 now. I struggled pretty badly with postpartum depression and anxiety,” Bell said. “I wrote to get through.”

Durham Tech’s Phlebotomy program received good news in 2024.
First, the program received accreditation from the American Society Phlebotomy Technicians in July. Then, the first class of Phlebotomy students to go through the program after it received accreditation all successfully passed the national phlebotomy certification test in mid-December and are now certified ASPT phlebotomist.
