Last week, we celebrated the launch of our pilot program with partners Novo Nordisk and Durham Public Schools that creates a BioWork pathway for dual-enrolled seniors at the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability.

Two Durham Tech students were recently selected to be a part of the Uproar Festival of Public Art contest. Archer Fralix is a fine arts student and Stu Beavers is in the welding program. 👏👏

Sixty artists were selected for Uproar and their art was showcased in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough through August. With Fralix’s piece in front of the Drakeford Library Complex in Carrboro and Beavers’ work at the Bicycle Chain on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

Beavers finished second runner up overall and has another piece showcased at the Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill.

Fralix’s piece won the Sponsors’ Choice award.

Six Durham Tech transfer students are attending NC State University this fall with a Goodnight Scholarship valued at $22,000 per year. 👏

This prestigious scholarship is for transfer students from low- and middle-income families in NC who are studying in a STEM or STEM-education field. The highly competitive application process involved written essays and a day on campus with activities and interviews. 📚

[NEWS] North Carolina Central University and Durham Tech formalized an agreement Wednesday, Sept. 3, to strengthen pathways to careers in the Life Sciences field. 👏

NCCU will admit students from Durham Tech who have completed the Associate in Applied Science in biotechnology, clinical trials research, or any other associate in applied science program that is related to the Life Sciences. 🧪🔬

Durham Tech recently partnered with the Kramden Institute to host another job skills computer class. Much like the initial course, this class covered topics such as office programs and virus protection, resume building, and forming and maintaining a professional online life/presence.

At the end of the four-hour course, each participant was awarded a free refurbished laptop equipped with Windows 11 software to serve their academic needs. 💻📚

The Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Colleges has appointed Durham Tech Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Kara Battle to the Commission on College Readiness.

The Commission provides recommendations for consideration to AACC and the School Superintendents Association leadership in the design and execution of the two associations’ joint meetings. The commission also helps identify promising practices and colleges and K-12 districts using innovative solutions to advance college-going rates.

Dr. Battle's term runs through June 30, 2028.

Campus weather update

Durham Tech's Orange County Campus will operate on Yellow Status beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, due to further forecasted rain following Tropical Depression Chantal. This means that the Orange County Campus will operate remotely except for essential personnel. Classes after 5 p.m. will be online. No other Durham Tech locations are affected.

The College will provide additional updates on Thursday morning, July 10, after assessing any impact from overnight storms.

Durham Tech students in the College’s Electric Line Technician program will now have the opportunity to apply for zero percent interest loans to cover living expenses and course costs.

Students can apply for loans between $2,000 and $10,000 once enrolled in Durham Tech’s Electrical Line Technician program. The loans can be used to meet life expenses students may face during the 14-week course, such as child care, transportation and housing costs.
