Plan of Study
(Courses by Semester)Emergency Medical Science AAS
Long Term
This program is designed to accelerate completion for currently certified paramedics, whether certified in North Carolina or nationally. These students can build upon their existing credential and experience to earn their associate degree in a shorter time frame, helping them advance more quickly in the EMS career field.
Students will develop complex knowledge, competency, and real-world experience while applying evidence-based practices under medical oversight. They will be trained to serve as critical responders who bridge the gap between the emergency scene and the healthcare system.
Students who are not yet certified as a paramedic are required to complete Durham Tech’s Paramedic (Continuing Education) program before applying to the Emergency Medical Science AAS program.
Durham Tech EMS Core Paramedic Curriculum courses align with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National EMS Education Standards for Paramedic Instruction (NHTSA). View course equivalency information.
- How to Enroll
View enrollment steps for the EMS (Paramedic) Associate in Applied Science (AAS) program on the Paramedic Education Enrollment page.
- Accelerated Baccalaureate Pathway
Upon completing the Emergency Medical Science Associate Degree, an accelerated pathway is available to enroll in the Baccalaureate of Emergency Medical Care Program. Students are eligible to advance their education through Western Carolina University via a “general” articulation process and credit earned (holding a North Carolina paramedic certification). They offer both an online & residential program. View more information about this pathway.
- Accreditation Information
The Durham Tech EMS Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
