Short Term

In addition to the many Continuing Education health and wellness programs offered at Durham Tech, we offer short courses that provide an introduction into the health care field, add new career skills, or help prepare students for certification exams.

Students who are sponsored by a third party, please submit your registration form and sponsorship letter electronically Electronic Document Submission portal. Choose the Nurse Aide Program link.

For the PHM-4100C Medication Aide course, a textbook is required and is available at the Durham Tech bookstore.

SAF-3023A AHA CPR Instructor Prerequisites: A BLS provider card and complete AHA Instructor Essentials online course is required. Email grahamj@durhamtech.edu with documentation and assistance with registering for the course.

Courses starting on July 1 or later will be open for registration on July 1. Students planning to register for courses with prerequisites should contact the program director to learn how to submit them ahead of time.

SEF-CSE Family Caregiving Support Education

This course provides an overview of some of the family caregiver's most common experiences and challenges. Additionally, it provides a general description of the health care system, eldercare agencies, family relationships, and community institutions that affect family caregiving and outcomes for care recipients. This course will be helpful to persons who are currently providing care for a family member or friend, or persons not currently providing care but anticipate that they may be required to provide caregiving in the future and are seeking to prepare for that role.

HEA-3122A Care Manager Training

This course is designed to provide individuals with the foundational knowledge, tools, and skills to work in care manager roles at various levels. The course focuses on care management and care coordination concepts, principles of care management practice, explores how care management fits within the broader healthcare system, and supports individuals in understanding value-based care. Individuals will be introduced to developing and implementing person-centered care plans to ensure that patients can implement effective self-management strategies to enable their recovery or management of complex, acute, or chronic health conditions. Participants will also learn how to identify and address social drivers of health and other barriers that impact health. Individuals who complete this course may be eligible to work at a variety of healthcare and community settings such as health departments, health systems, federally qualified health centers, clinics, and/or community-based organizations.

HEA-3101A TEAS Test Prep

This course prepares students to take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Materials provided include a generous packet with strategies and practice problems for each section of the TEAS (Reading Comprehension, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage). Test-taking and anxiety-reduction skills are covered. No prerequisites or placement testing is required. Email nurseaide@durhamtech.edu for more information.

PHM-4100C Medication Aide for Skilled Nursing

This course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified as a Medication Aide in a Skilled Nursing facility. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics will include medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and legal implications. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the state competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. Prerequisites for this course include ALL of the following: High School Diploma/Equivalency, and current Nurse Aide I Registry Listing. SEF-3001XP AHA BLS, Healthcare Providers

The AHA's BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Upon completion of all course requirements, participants receive a BLS Provider Course Completion Card which is valid for two years.

SEF-CII2 Community Interpreter International

The Community Interpreter International course will cover the interpreter's role, interpreter code of ethics, standards of practice, modes of interpreting, note-taking techniques, memory development, strategic mediation, interpreting in healthcare, cultural competence, and strategic mediation practice. Self-study materials and textbooks included. Open to all language pairs. Instruction is in English. (Ages 18 and up)
