Medical Coding (Non-credit)

Short Term

The following courses teach the skills and concepts necessary for entry-level coding positions in a variety of health care facilities.

Students may elect to sit for certification exams offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and/or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Since students must meet the respective organization’s examination criteria, practical experience is recommended prior to sitting for these certification exams.

Estimated Cost

Tuition per course: $161-$182
Books for Coding Courses (see note below): $500-$700
Credentialing Exam (AAPC or AHIMA): $299-$399

Note: Codebooks are updated in January each year. Since current year codebooks are required for the certification exam, students may have to purchase a second set of codebooks depending on when they complete the courses and sit for the exam. Instructors will be using the current year codebooks.

Course Sequence

Courses must be taken in the following order:

  1. Terminology for Anatomy and Physiology
  2. Medical Coding I
  3. Medical Coding II
  4. Medical Coding Exam Prep Bootcamp

Courses are offered in various semesters.

The most efficient and cost-effective course sequence is starting in the fall due to the requirement to have the most current codebooks:

Fall – Terminology for Anatomy and Physiology
Spring – Medical Coding I
Summer – Medical Coding II
Fall – Medical Coding Exam Prep Bootcamp

MED-3030N Medical Coding I ICD 10

ICD-10CM/PCS (International Classification of Disease, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System) consists of ICD-10CM for diagnosis coding and ICD-10PCS for inpatient procedure coding. ICD-10CM is used in US health care settings. Diagnosis coding will change from three to five digits and will transition to three to seven digits. ICD-10PCS is for the use of inpatient hospital setting only. It represents seven alphanumeric digits instead of the three or four numeric digits used in ICD-9CM procedure coding. Coding under ICD-10PCS is more specific and different from ICD-9CM procedure coding. In this course, students learn the conventions and guidelines, as well as how to apply ICD-10CM/PCS scenarios. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the concepts of ICD-10CM/PCS and have experience in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Prerequisite: Completion of Terminology for A&P course at Durham Tech or another college. Students must submit proof of prerequisites prior to registration. Please email cealliedhealth@durhamtech.edu for questions regarding the program or registration process.
