Peer Support Specialist (Continuing Education)

Short Term

Peer Support Specialist are professionals that have first-hand experience recovering from a mental health concern, substance use, or traumatic brain injury and due to gained wisdom and passion for humanity these professionals have become certified to assist others that need help through their recovery journey and healing process.

Peer Support Specialists are certified to work in Veteran Affairs Offices, all levels of care within substance use facilities, in jails, inpatient mental health hospitals, emergency departments, community agencies, homeless shelters, group homes, churches, YMCA, vocational rehabilitation, substance use facilities, peer support programs, and facilitate support groups.

Notification for Certification or Re-Certification of Peer Support Specialist

Durham Technical Community College provides the 20 hours needed for certification and re-certification via the 96 hours of training provided in this course. It is a critical step in the process and one part of the certification journey. For more information on certification, visit UNC-Chapel Hill's Peer Support Specialist Program website.

MHA-3100B Peer Spt:Treatment Intervent.

This course provides supplemental training for individuals pursuing or maintaining North Carolina Peer Support Specialist certification through the UNC-Chapel Hill Peer Support Specialist Certification Program. Instruction focuses on treatment-based interventions, practical skill development, professional boundaries, documentation, ethics, and best practices that support effective Peer Support services in behavioral health and human service settings. This course may be used to satisfy the additional 20 hours of Human Service training required for initial certification or recertification. It does not replace the required Foundations of Peer Support Part I (Online) or Part II (Instructor-Led) courses and does not lead to certification on its own.
