University Transfer Options

Students can use the the Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree to complete an Associate's degree and then transfer to a a four-year college or university.

The Associate in Arts (AFA)

The Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) is intended for students who ultimately wish to complete a baccalaureate fine arts degree (BFA or BAFA) at a four-year college or university. AFA curriculum courses focus on visual arts but the degree also includes general education offerings that emphasize the development of analytical skills, written and oral communication, and competencies in math and science.

Course Selection Guide

This template has been developed by referencing the Baccalaureate Degree plans or the native student plans posted on the websites of UNC universities with studio art or bachelor of fine arts degrees, plus NC Central, which has a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art program.

Students who successfully complete this course of study with an AFA degree will have met the entrance requirements for application directly into the BFA program at all of the schools listed below except NC Central, although acceptance into any BFA program is not guaranteed. Students who transfer before completing the degree must meet the entrance to the major requirements and the general education requirements at the receiving institution.

  • Appalachian State University (ASU)
  • East Carolina University (ECU)
  • North Carolina Central University (NCCU)
  • UNC-Asheville (UNCA)
  • UNC-Chapel Hill (UNCCH)
  • UNC-Charlotte (UNCC)
  • UNC-Greensboro (UNCG)
  • UNC-Wilmington (UNCW)
  • Western Carolina University (WCU)

Students should print out and save the baccalaureate degree plan (BDP) for their major and intended transfer university.
