*This program is financial aid eligible.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a program designed to help students improve their skills in U.S. Academic English. Students entering this program already have the basics of English (or speak another variety of English), but need to improve their skills as it relates to college-level reading, writing, research, grammar, listening, and speaking. The EAP classes are credit courses (under the course acronym EFL) and are taught at the college level, so all assignments are authentic college writing and reading assignments even at the lowest levels. Students are also given the chance to acclimate to the cultural expectations of the college environment.

Program highlights:

  • Courses are for-credit (curriculum-based).
  • Tuition based on credit hours.
  • Classes are offered in reading, writing, grammar, and listening/speaking.
  • Courses qualify for federal financial aid (FAFSA).
  • Level 4 classes (EFL 074/094) meet college reading/writing prerequisites.
  • Classes are student-centered.
  • Student population is diverse.
  • Small classes provide more opportunities for teacher/student feedback.
  • Coursework includes a variety of topics, such as biology, literature, psychology, health technologies, philosophy, current events, culture, sociology, etc.)

EAP Mission Statement

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program delivers dynamic student-centered curriculum and instruction to non-native speakers of US English. We aim to facilitate the development of academic, professional, and personal language skills, which includes proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing; educational technology; intercultural communication/cultural competence; and the ability to succeed in US college and university systems. In further support of the Center for the Global Learner’s (CGL) mission, the EAP program regards its role as an integral part of Durham Tech’s vision to empower learners to enrich the local and global communities.
