ACCUPLACER ESL Test

Students visit the testing center they are asked whether they speak US English as their first language and if they have graduated from a US high school. If students answer “No” to one or both of these questions, they are given the ACCUPLACER ESL Test.

The ACCUPLACER ESL Test is a free, untimed, multiple-choice online test that helps evaluate a student's English skills to place them into the appropriate classes. Students must provide both their student ID number and their photo ID to take the test. For additional information or questions, please email Farwa Shah.

What to Expect

Students taking the Accuplacer ESL test in the areas of reading skills, language use, and sentence meaning must meet with the Director of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (or their designee), who will evaluate their placement test scores and conduct personal interviews.

During the interviews, the Director (or their designee) may request a writing sample to accurately determine a student’s skill level. Students will be placed into the appropriate EAP reading and writing course, with the possibility of an additional grammar or listening/speaking course.

  • Students who place in Levels 1 and 2 of EFL reading and writing courses should not take the Durham Tech Math Placement Tests unless they have permission from the Director of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (or their designee).

  • Students who place in Levels 3 and 4 will take either the Durham Tech QL/Stat or the Durham Tech Algebra Placement Test.

  • Students whose test scores and interviews indicate that they meet the language skill level criteria will take the Durham Tech Placement Tests in math and English

  • Students may not retest in any area of the ACCUPLACER ESL placement test unless they have met with and received permission from the Director of EAP (or their designee).
